As everyone knows, moving home can be a very stressful experience and that’s just for us humans! It can be a lot worse for your pets but there are things that you can do which will ease this process.
First of all, pay a visit to the vet to check that all vaccinations are up to date. If you have a pet that really dislikes traveling then you may find that your vet will suggest a mild sedative for the day.
On moving day, and on the busy days immediately before and afterwards, try to keep your pet’s routines the same. Walk your dog as usual, feed your pets at the same time and in the same place as you normally would.
If your pet needs to get used to traveling in a basket or a pet carrier on moving day, then bring it down from the loft or the shed a few days beforehand so your pet can get a little used to it.
Make sure your cat or dog has a collar with details of your new address and phone number in case of emergency. On moving day make sure you allocate a safe, relatively quiet place for your pet from which they won’t be able to run off and escape.
Once you arrive at your new residence, it’s a good idea to prioritise setting up fish tanks and reptile enclosures etc, so that your pet is soon back in familiar surroundings. If you have a cat, it’s a good idea to keep it inside for a week or two until it gets to used to its new home. Once you are established in your new home, make sure you give your pets plenty of fuss and attention.
