You may be a family which is desperate to have a dog as a pet, but is put off by the cost of vet’s bills, fancy feeding and regular grooming and, if you lead busy working lives, then you may be worried about the amount of time it takes to look after a dog. All dogs require regular exercise, so you won’t get away with a “couch dog”, but you could easily incorporate walking the dog as an alternative to spending time at the gym.
However, listed below are five breeds of dog which require very little grooming or fancy diets and which do not usually need frequent and expensive visits to the vet.
A short-haired chihuahua requires very little grooming and doesn’t usually need to visit the vet very often.
If you are looking for a bigger family pet, then Labradors require very little maintenance and have short hair which requires just minimal grooming. Just keep an eye on their ears to make sure they do not pick up any infections.
The short-haired dachshund is another low maintenance breed. As they get older though, you may need a few more visits to the vet as they can develop back problems.
Although, lively and energetic, beagles are considered to be another low maintenance dog.
Finally, our last recommendation is the Jack Russell, a breed which is easy to look after, requiring minimal brushing and bathing and mostly just routine vet care.
