It can be confusing trying to work out which is the best type of collar to buy your pet.
The most common kind of collar is a simple buckle collar which has a metal buckle which can be adjusted according to the size of your dog’s neck. This kind of collar is suitable for most dogs.
For young dogs that are being trained, a slip collar or choke chain can be a good option. A slip collar will encourage a dog not to pull on the lead. If your dog is strong and always pulling at the lead, a slip collar may help to encourage him to walk by your side. You can buy a slip collar which is made from softer material (rather than a chain) which is less harsh around your dog’s neck.
A safety collar, which is sometimes known as a “break away” collar, is a type of collar which will break or release if the collar is under too much strain, usually because it has been caught on something. This can be a good type of collar if you take your dog out for a walk and let him loose in the countryside. If his collar gets caught on undergrowth or on a gatepost, for instance, then it will break, before the dog is strangled and seriously injured.
All collars come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses to suit the tiniest chihuahua to the biggest Saint Bernard.
