It’s very important that your dog is restrained properly in your car whether it is on a long journey or a five minute trip to the local shops.
There are many reasons to make sure your pet travels safely in your car. Firstly, your dog could distract you if it is allowed to wander loose around the interior of your vehicle and cause an accident. Secondly, if you are involved in an accident, your dog may escape or be seriously hurt if it is unrestrained. Thirdly, your dog could be hurt by other heavier objects in your car if you have an accident or even if you have to do an emergency stop.
The best way to secure your pet is to use a crate. These can be made of wire, plastic or metal and they are dependent on there being enough space in the boot of your car. Make sure you have the crate secured safely in your boot so that it can’t slide around or move. If you have no room for a crate or are not happy to use one with your pet, then you can buy harnesses and seat belts that are suitable for dogs. For small dogs, it’s even possible to buy a car seat which is secured by the seat belts of the car.
Be aware that it is not safe to have your dog in the front seat, whether he is in a crate or secured with a harness, if your car has a passenger seat airbag.
