Firstly, it’s convenient. Not all folks have the time to make home-cooked meals for their dogs and cats. Even making a relatively quick meal can take its toll on a person every day, so by being able to pick up a tin out of the cupboard and give your pet the nutrients they need is a huge advantage in terms of caring for a pet.
Compared with home-cooked meals, sometimes, pet food is actually cheaper at times but this bring us on to our next point; quality. Generally, the most expensive pet food is made using the best ingredients because it’s formulated to supply complete nutrition for dogs. Homemade dog foods, as healthy as they’ll be, may at times lack the nutrients to nourish them. Pet foods do go through a strict process before they hit the shelves, so you can trust in the majority of the brands that you find in your local supermarket.
It’s obviously likely to be true that most people who own pets will have spent a lot of money cooking and also throwing away food because they don’t want to eat it (even if they devoured that very same meal just the opposite day). Rather than having the food just ending up in the bin, pet food, is made to last for an extended time period so on those days when they ignore the food, or don’t fancy it, another day they will and the food will still be good to eat.
As for purchasing imported pet food, it’s usually a matter of private preference. To be frank, it’s no different to us buying imported brands for private use (handbag, smartphones, shoes, chocolates, etc). you’ll buy local products but sometimes, imported dog food is way better in terms of quality.
So, while it’s impossible to form sweeping generalisations about dog foods and pet food suppliers, it’s not always going to be true that expensive dog foods are better than budget-priced counterparts. High prices can sometimes increase the perceived value of a product even though it’s exactly the same, so don’t be afraid to inspect the ingredients and see what your dog likes more, and research the nutritional value each food provides.
We would argue that it’s always beneficial to do your homework and take the time to find out what is actually included in each dog food product, especially if it’s going to be a part of your canine’s longterm diet moving forwards. Don’t always trust that the premium products will deliver the best nutrients because it’s simply not the case. There will be cheap brands that are far from nutritious, however, there will also be higher priced brands lacking in this area too, so look at each product on an individual basis.
