Many young children hanker after having a pet of their own and lots would dearly love to have a dog trotting alongside them. Having a dog in the family can instill a sense of responsibility in children and a dog can be a wonderful companion for a child.
If a dog is trained and treated well by the family, then almost any dog can make an ideal pet for children. However, it is also advisable to bear in mind that dogs can get fed up with too much attention from young children and it is a parent’s responsibility to make sure that a child treats the family pet in the correct manner.
Breeds which are usually good to have around children include boxers and labradors which are friendly and quite energetic. They will need to be walked every day, preferably twice a day to prevent them getting bored and getting too boisterous in the home. Old English sheepdogs and golden retrievers also make good family pets.
