It can be difficult to know just when to take your pet to the vet as animals are obviously unable to tell us exactly what is wrong.
However, there are some signs to look out for…
If your dog is off its food for a couple of days or more, then that is a sign that something could be amiss. Excessive thirst may be an indication that your dog is suffering from a kidney problem or diabetes.
Everybody knows that a healthy pet should have a shiny coat so if your dog’s fur is looking dull and matted, or with dry patches, then this may be a sign of a skin condition or an allergy. Cloudy or red eyes may also be an indication that your dog has an infection.
Most dogs have an abundance of energy so if your dog seems sluggish and tired for more than two days then you will need to get him checked over by a vet. You will know your own pet so if he is usually keen to go for a walk or usually playful, then it is time to seek an expert opinion.
Occasional vomiting is not unusual but if your dog does it several times in a day or vomits blood then this could be a sign of something more serious. If your dog leaves dry, hard stools, this may also need checking out. Likewise if your pets’ stools contain blood, worms or a lot of mucus or are very loose and runny.
After a while, you will get to know your own puppy or dog. Be observant and aware of changes in health and, if in any doubt, do not hesitate to take your pet to the vet.
